We’re thrilled to reveal we’ve been nominated for Current Archaeology’s Rescue Project of the Year 2026, for our project “Fields and farmsteads: organising the early Roman frontier region in South Yorkshire”.

Vote for us!

This nomination recognises our exciting archaeological work at Holme Hall Quarry for Breedon, which discusses the early Roman frontier region prior to the advance northwards to the Hadrianic frontier, revealing how the landscape in this area was transformed into extensive, carefully planned field systems and farmsteads during the early Roman period.

But was all this development thanks to the work of local Iron Age communities, or was it a land-grab by an occupying army?

The project appears in the July issue of Current Archaeology (see the link below), where you’ll find the mystery of these field systems becoming clearer thanks to our large-scale excavations. Indeed, investigations at Holme Hall Quarry have contributed significantly to our understanding of the area, thanks to an initial geophysical survey and fieldwalking, plus excavations in 2015 and 2019–2022, and then the post-excavation work. The findings have revealed a busy landscape of multi-period remains, from the earliest Mesolithic findings to detailed insights into how the early Roman frontier region in Britain was organised prior to the invasion of the territory of the Brigantes in c.AD 69.
