We’re currently overseeing further work at Whirlow Hall Farm near Sheffield. Previously we’ve worked in partnership with the farm and the Time Travellers amateur archaeology group to conduct training participation and learning activities including research, building recording, geophysical survey and excavation. Have a look at our Whirlow Hall Farm projects page to see what we’ve discovered in the past.
This time we’re working with Sheffield University to provide training for their 1st Year students in geophysical survey, excavation, test pits, environmental sampling, geochemical sampling and experimental archaeology. We’re taking the opportunity to investigate some significant new features that have been identified through geophysics including a ditched enclosure around a natural spring, a large sub-circular ditched enclosure and a linear ditched boundary feature. We’re also digging test pits, carrying out further geophysical survey and experimental archaeology work building a timber roundhouse that will be shown to visitors and used as an educational resource. Watch out for more information when we analyse the results of this exciting work!
