A new publication is now available on our website that looks at work undertaken at Holme Hall Quarry, South Yorkshire.
Working on behalf of Breedon Aggregates, fieldwalking, geophysical surveys, and excavations took place in 2014–2015 and 2019–2022, and involved archaeological stripping, mapping, sample excavations, and watching briefs. This work went on to reveal an extensive field system and early Roman farmsteads, as well as the remains of earlier and later activity across an area of landscape where very little archaeology had previously been known.
The downloadable ebook on our website shows that this work adds an important dimension to the archaeology of South Yorkshire and reveals how strip, map and sample excavation can help to fill in gaps in knowledge and give a more detailed understanding of the organisation of the early Roman frontier region in Britain.
The publication is available from the publisher, Archaeopress, as a paperback (£40) at www.archaeopress.com (Morris, F. M. 2025. Excavations at Holme Hall Quarry, South Yorkshire). An article in Current Archaeology is planned for spring/summer 2025.
You can find more information on the site, and the publication, on our website here.
