We’re happy to have just renewed our ‘Friends’ subscription in support of Dronfield Hall Barn. The Old Barn, which is a Grade II* Listed medieval – late medieval building, was altered and renovated in 2013 as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project prior to being opened up to the public and used as a community space, wedding venue and cafe.
ARS Ltd assisted with the project both in its planning and by carrying out archaeological investigations which included an historic building recording and the excavation of four trenches in and around the Old Barn. The trenches were excavated with the help of local volunteers which provided training opportunities in archaeological excavation and recording techniques.
Historic mapping from the 19th century shows a former building fronting the High Street which was successfully found in one of the trenches and was dated to the early 18th century. The other three trenches, which were excavated within the Old Barn, found evidence of an earlier building including substantial wall foundations and stone floor surfaces of a previous medieval hall. We are pleased to support this community asset in these challenging times.
