Over the past few months we’ve been monitoring excavations for the new cinema in Beeston Town Centre and have uncovered the remains of the Foster & Pearson Limited horticultural engineering works. This business was established in the 1800s and was present on the site until 1961. During excavations we located the base of a brick-built furnace that had been used to cast iron fittings for the glass houses and hot houses that were produced in the factory, as well as some associated cellars and wells. Our site archaeologist said, ‘we’re really pleased to have had lots of local interest in this site from passers-by, and particularly enjoyed people sharing their stories and memories of the area. Some people even remembered the factory still standing’. Now that archaeological work on the site has come to an end, work can begin developing the new eight-screen cinema.
