CARD Fund Celebration: The Archaeology of Britain in 100 (radiocarbon) dates

Join us as we celebrate our community radiocarbon-dating fund delivering its 100th date!

Hear from radiocarbon leading experts and pioneers, Dr. Alex Bayliss (Head of Scientific Dating at Historic England) and Prof. Derek Hamilton (Professor of Archaeological Science at SUERC), as well as from fund founder Dr. Clive Waddington (Managing Director of Archaeological Research Services Ltd), about the latest in radiocarbon dating thinking, how the fund works and how to apply for dates. The Community Archaeology Radiocarbon Dating (CARD) Fund, sponsored by ARS Ltd and Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) Radiocarbon Laboratory, is a scheme that funds radiocarbon dates for volunteer and community groups all across the UK. It has just reached an extra special milestone by funding 100 radiocarbon dates in the last nine years!

We are hosting a celebration event on Saturday 16 November at the historic King’s Manor in York, courtesy of York University. The afternoon event will include talks from Alex, Derek and Clive, visual display of the projects funded and a panel Q & A session. There will be a refreshment break with tea and coffee during the talks with a wine reception following the panel Q & A.  Attendees are also invited for refreshment at a local hostelry where there will be further opportunities to talk to the speakers. The talks will include a history of the fund as told through 100 carbon dates from some fantastic community archaeology projects, as well as current developments in radiocarbon dating and how Bayesian modelling has revolutionised scientific dating.

The event is free and open to all. The event will be of interest to a volunteer, academic and student audience,  but places are limited so be sure to reserve your spot using the EventBrite link below.

The event will run from 12:30 – 4:45pm, light refreshments will be provided and invitations are extended to continue the celebrations afterwards at a nearby traditional establishment.
