Education and Outreach
Education and outreach, the latter referring to public awareness and involvement, are a key element of archaeological work today. Investing in such initiatives can provide huge value-added benefits to any project, whether research-based or commercial. As a leading provider of archaeological education and outreach services, ARS Ltd is committed to providing communities with access to their own past.
Archaeology as a subject is ideally placed to assist teaching and learning in a wide range of subject areas ranging from history, geography and science through to drama, English and citizenship. Fieldwork also provides many opportunities for teaching mixed-ability groups, fostering teamwork, initiative-building and leadership.
Recent examples of ARS Ltd education and outreach work include:
- Running a rock art excavation project open to the public.
- Participation of over 120 Key Stage 2 children in the Howick Project including the production of a teacher's pack.
- Construction of the Maelmin Heritage Trail with volunteers from across the community.
- Training AS and A Level college students as part of the Till-Tweed Project.
- Running student training excavations for Newcastle University.
Current education and outreach projects:
ARS Ltd and staff from Tarmac’s Lanton Quarry, near Wooler, are currently involved in a project working alongside seven schools in Northumberland to help children learn more about the past in their local area. The project, which is funded by English Heritage and Tarmac, aims to teach the children about the historic environment where they live and what it means to them. The project also allows the children to visit a working quarry and to learn about some of the work that Tarmac does. Students from Newcastle University will also visit Lanton Quarry to learn about education projects in the historic environment.
