Botanical Macrofossil Analysis (Plant Remains)
Material such as cereal grains and weed seeds (plant macrofossils) are found on most archaeological sites. They are most commonly preserved by charring or waterlogging, although mineral replacement and dessication (usually in standing buildings) can also occur. Plant macrofossils provide information relating to diet, arable farming, the keeping of livestock, introduction of non-indigenous plants, the reconstruction of local environments as well as many other aspects of past human behaviour and environmental impact.
At ARS Ltd we have experience of plant macrofossil recovery and analysis and can provide a complete service that includes:
- Assessments of macrofossils to provide information on the condition, range and potential of material
- Analysis of macrofossils to produce information on past environments
- Fast production of detailed and publication-standard reports following completion of analysis. The reports include a systematic interpretation of the results obtained
- Advice on potential for further analysis and dating of macrofossils
- Integration with our other palaeoenvironmental services
