How we investigated the site

 

Lanton Quarry extends over an area of approximately 40ha and was investigated using a number of different archaeological techniques. By using a combination of techniques we can piece together the different information, a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, to gain as clear an understanding of the past as possible. The archaeological work started off with fieldwalking, followed by a test pit, environmental analysis and finally excavation. The term we use for the excavation technique employed is 'strip, map and sample' as this accurately describes the process. To find out more about each of these techniques follow the links below.
